Hävelid returns to Sweden

Swedish defenseman Niclas Hävelid has signed a one-year contract plus an option for another year with SEL team Linköping.

There have been a lot of talks about him returning to Sweden after this season. The discussions have been more about where in Sweden he would end up though rather than if.

In Linköping, Niclas will join his brother Magnus Hävelid, who is the assistant coach, and his good friend Johan Hemlin, the GM of Linköping.

Niclas Hävelid, who finished the current season with the New Jersey Devils, will now try to join the unique group of players that have won the Swedish Championship, the World Championship and the Olympics as he already has won the later two. He never got to win the Stanley Cup though in his 9 seasons in the NHL.

Matte's back!

For some reason I was always sure Havelid would end up a Red Wing for part of his career. I think I targeted him the past few trade deadlines. Looks late, now

I'd hope it's for more than because he's Swedish. But that's very possibly the extent of my reason.

On an unrelated note, I'd heard a few weeks ago that some SEL teams were about ready to break out, most likely to the KHL. Or some kind of All-European competitor. Obviously I didn't read too much into it, could be completely false. But if there's something to it, it might make an interesting post? :)

I have been meaning to do it earlier, but I'm gonna see if I can get some time in a week or two to really explain what's going on in the SEL at the moment. :)
